In the archery shop of George and Sandra DeFazio, there is a wall covered with photographs of happy people. The photos show them with the animal they just shot, with the bow equipment they purchased at Just Archery by George.

DeFazio owns Just Archery by George, 901 Floyd Ave., with his wife, Sandra. According to George DeFazio the great thing about bow hunting is that archery hunters are the "first in the woods (northern zone of NYS) and the last out (southern zone)." Hunting hours are from sunrise to sunset.

"Archery is the number two family participating sport in America" said DeFazio, who has been in business since 1994. "It's something you can do all year long." According to DeFazio, people who bow hunt start practicing about two to three months before the season starts.

Successful bow hunting requires "a bow, arrows, a release and a lot of practice," said DeFazio. According to DeFazio, 56, who has been hunting since he was 16 years old, there is more stealth and scent control because bow hunting is "very up close and personal".

The best shot with a bow is "within a 20 yard range," said DeFazio, adding "you want a humane kill." DeFazio uses everything in a hunt whether it is ground blinds, tree stand, hiding behind a tree or relying on 40 years hunting experience. "There is a lot more skill involved with bow hunting."

Just Archery by George has just about every item a bow hunter could want. The DeFazio's have built a great reputation not only in Oneida County, but beyond. "The number one female archer in France called me in the middle of the night and ordered $7,000 worth of equipment," said DeFazio proudly.


Just Archery by George sells the popular Parker Compound Bows. Packages at Just Archery go from $249 to $649 and include a sight, quiver, rest, stabilizer and a bow. The only thing the hunting package doesn't include is arrows.

After you have purchased your set up, archery clubs in Camden and Verona can fine tune your inner Robin Hood. According to DeFazio the Wood Creek Archery club on Townline Road is strictly for archers and features 60 targets spread through the woods. There is a scoring system for each objective similar to golf. "You can spend the whole day practicing and having fun," said DeFazio.

Memberships are reasonable for a family, around $50. The only thing slowing down the DeFazio's health business is the state of the nation's financial situation. "The economy is killing us," said DeFazio.

According to DeFazio, business is down 30%. Big ticket items aren't selling. However, the repair business is booming. People are making do with what they already own, bringing in their bows for tuning and repair. And, while they are in the shop, they buy arrows. DeFazio noted that for a few of his customers, it is essential to hunt so they can eat.

Even if you don't buy anything at Just Archery by George, you will thoroughly enjoy your visit. The DeFazio's have three dogs, five birds, totem poles and wood carvings to fascinate every visitor.

There is a thick tree in the store covered with the signatures of everybody who has bought a bow, young and old. Many of those people quickly submitted a photo for the trophy wall because of the service provided to them from Just Archery by George.
